A significant earthquake struck yesterday off the northeast coast of Japan, closest to Aomori prefecture. The earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.6 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and 7.5 by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) struck at a depth of 44 km, and led to tsunami warnings. The initial warnings were later downgraded to advisories, though many locations did see tsunami waves of up to 70 cm following the temblor, including in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture. The initial quake was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest of which was measured at magnitude 6.6.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for the recent M7.5 earthquake in Japan from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s location, magnitude, and depth. They should only be used with exposures in Japan.
Reports thus far indicate a relatively low level of damage given the high magnitude of the quake. Damage was reported to at least one commercial structure in Hachinohe, Aomori prefecture, and elsewhere, items were knocked from shelves and walls. The quake produced long-period ground motions -- slow, wide-swinging seismic waves that can significantly impact high-rise buildings. In parts of Aomori Prefecture, they were strong enough to make it difficult for people in high-rises to remain standing. 34 people were injured in the quake, at least one seriously.
