Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle is set to make landfall in a sparsely populated area of Queensland, the strongest storm to make landfall in Australia so far this year and just the fourth Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) category 5 landfall in Queensland in the past half century. The worst impacts from Narelle’s first landfall will be felt from Lockhart River to Cape Flattery, where wind gusts in excess of 160 km/h may occur. As of 1200 UTC on the 19th of March, Narelle had a minimum central pressure of 925 hPa, maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 110 knots (220 km/h), and was moving west at 11 knots.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Cyclone Narelle’s impacts in Queensland from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle, with a focus on impacts in Queensland. They should only be used with exposures in Australia.
Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast for Narelle as of 1500 UTC, 19th March
After traversing northern Queensland, Narelle is expected to enter the Gulf of Carpentaria and approach the coast of the Northern Territory over the weekend. Some restrengthening is possible as the storm moves back out over relatively warm ocean waters prior to its anticipated second landfall Sunday.
The Verisk ALERT team will continue to monitor Cyclone Narelle and maybe provide additional updates depending on impacts in the Northern Territory. Our next update, if needed, will be Monday morning, U.S. East Coast time. In the meantime, please contact your Verisk representative with any additional questions about Cyclone Narelle.
