Hurricane Lowell, which had peaked as a Category 5 storm before weakening, made its closest pass to Hawaii late Monday night into Tuesday morning as a Category 2 hurricane, tracking roughly 100–150 miles west of Kauai. The storm brought damaging surf of up to 30 feet and hurricane force wind gusts to Kauai and Niʻihau, along with hurricane and tropical storm warnings across Kauai County and Oahu. Kauai saw the heaviest rainfall, with totals reaching a foot or more in higher elevations, while Oahu's Koolau mountains picked up 5 to 9 inches of rain and most other areas received 1 to 3 inches. Multiple rivers on Kauai reached flood stage, and heavy rain flooded roads on Oahu as well.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Lowell’s impacts in Hawaii from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and approach angle. They should only be used with exposures in Hawaii.
Power outages have been widespread: more than 30,000 customers lost power on Oahu, while around 90% of homes and businesses in Kauai County lost electricity, with wind gusts there reaching up to 87 mph in Nawiliwili and 84 mph in Lihue. Officials reported downed power lines, downed trees, and debris scattered across Kauai, urging residents to shelter in place. Lowell's track less than 50 miles from Niihau made it the strongest hurricane to affect the main Hawaiian Islands since Category 4 Iniki in 1992, and it's notably the third storm to target Hawaii in just over three weeks amid an intense El Niño-driven Pacific hurricane season. The storm is expected to gradually weaken as it moves north away from the islands.
