Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest tropical cyclone so far of 2026, is making landfall over Saipan and Tinian in the Mariana Islands this evening local time as a Saffir-Simpson Category 4 storm, the strongest typhoon to strike so close to Saipan and Tinian since Category 5 Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018. A typhoon warning was in effect for other parts of the Northern Mariana Islands, which are home to more than 47,000 people. Guam, another U.S. territory nearby to the west, was under a typhoon watch. “Devastating damage is possible,” the National Weather Service warned, noting specifically the danger from airborne debris. Homes with metal roofs will likely be destroyed, it said, and water and electricity will be unavailable for days and perhaps weeks after the storm passes.
