Typhoon Dujuan made a close approach to Japan's Pacific coast on Monday, passing roughly 150 kilometers from Yokosuka without making a direct mainland landfall, though its size and track brought severe conditions to a wide swath of eastern Japan. The storm carried sustained winds around 126 kilometers per hour as it passed about 130 kilometers south of Katsuura in Chiba prefecture, making it roughly equivalent to a Saffir-Simpson Category 1 hurricane. The typhoon brought torrential rain, violent winds, and a heightened risk of landslides across the Kanto region and other parts of eastern Japan, with as much as 14 inches of rain forecast for central Tokyo as the storm moved through the Izu Islands.

ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Dujuan’s impacts in Japan from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Verisk Synergy Studio, Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and approach angle. They should only be used with exposures in Japan.
The disruption has been widespread across the Tokyo metropolitan area and beyond. Heavy rain hit the Izu Islands and Kanto region, prompting advisories and evacuation orders in some areas during Japan's Silver Week holiday period, and evacuation alerts were sent to elderly residents in Meguro, a Tokyo suburb, with a level 3 alert issued for central Tokyo. Flooding and landslide warnings extended across Chiba's coastal areas even though the storm wasn't expected to make direct landfall, and the typhoon generated significant wave heights up to 9.8 meters (32 feet) offshore. Transportation was significantly affected, with planes and trains grounded across Tokyo and the Chubu region, and the disruption extended to public events, forcing organizers to close Tokyo Game Show 2026 a day early.
