Typhoon Noul made landfall in China early on July 26, 2026, near Pinghai Town in Huidong County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. The storm came ashore at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time as the strongest typhoon to make landfall in China so far in 2026. Reported maximum sustained winds near landfall varied by source, with estimates ranging from about 145 km/h (90 mph) to 162 km/h (101 mph). After landfall, Noul moved inland across Guangdong and weakened progressively while continuing to bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of southern China.

Authorities relocated hundreds of thousands of people in Guangdong Province ahead of and during Typhoon Noul’s landfall. Early reports indicated around 340,000 residents had been evacuated by Saturday afternoon, while later reporting cited more than 715,000 and, subsequently, more than 801,000 people relocated for safety across Guangdong. Emergency measures included typhoon and rainstorm alerts, flood-control preparations, suspension of some public activities, and coordination by local and national agencies to reduce risk to residents and critical infrastructure.
The typhoon caused widespread disruption across parts of Guangdong Province, particularly in coastal and urban areas affected by damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Reports from Huidong County indicated that more than 5,000 trees were knocked down, more than 30 road blockages occurred, and power outages affected about 100,000 households, with restoration work underway by Sunday morning. Flooding, debris, fallen trees, and damaged utility infrastructure complicated cleanup and emergency response efforts.
The most consistently reported impacts were concentrated around eastern Guangdong, including Huizhou, Huidong, Shanwei, Shenzhen, and surrounding coastal areas, with additional disruption in neighboring Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, authorities reported flight cancellations, storm-related injuries, fallen trees, and damage to scaffolding as Noul passed nearby before weakening inland.
Transportation impacts were significant across southern China and Hong Kong. Train services in Guangdong Province were canceled or suspended on Sunday as the storm moved inland. Hong Kong International Airport reported hundreds of flight cancellations, with around 350 flights canceled on Sunday in several reports and approximately 2,000 passengers stranded over the weekend. Additional reporting indicated that more than 700 flights were grounded in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, underscoring the broader disruption to regional air travel.
Coastal communities and businesses faced interruptions from flooding, wind damage, debris, and suspended operations. In several affected cities, authorities implemented all or part of the “five suspensions,” including suspensions of classes, work, production, public transportation, and business operations. Fishing vessels and offshore workers were also ordered to seek shelter or return to land ahead of the storm.
After landfall, Noul was expected to continue producing heavy to torrential rainfall across parts of southern and central China as it weakened inland. China issued high-level flash-flood warnings for several provinces, with authorities emphasizing risks in mountain areas, river valleys, construction sites, bridges, and other flood-prone locations. Rainfall associated with the system was expected to persist into the following days, maintaining the potential for flash flooding, landslides, transportation disruption, and additional infrastructure impacts.
