A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, August 10, at 7:34 a.m. local time, with an epicenter in Chocó Department about 20 km from San José del Palmar, at an intermediate depth of roughly 100 km. More than 2 million people were exposed to very strong shaking, a level the USGS says can cause considerable damage in poorly built structures and slight-to-moderate damage even in well-built ones, with the epicenter located about 200 miles southwest of Medellín. The quake was felt far beyond the epicenter — tremors reached the capital Bogotá (250 miles to the east) and were felt as far away as Venezuela, while shaking was also reported in Cali, Panama and Ecuador.

The heaviest damage so far has been reported inland from the epicenter. In Manizales, videos showed parts of the city's Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica, the tallest cathedral in Colombia, crumbling during the tremor. Cali's mayor said at least 20 structures had collapsed, trapping people under rubble as emergency crews worked to reach them, and the governor of Chocó reported injuries and significant damage to buildings in the departmental capital, Quibdó, with authorities worried about aftershocks. Damage was also reported in the city of Pereira. Initial estimates from USGS PAGER indicated a roughly 40% chance economic losses could exceed $1 billion. Colombia's president convened an emergency meeting with the national disaster management agency (UNGRD) to assess damage and coordinate the response. The full extent of this event is still not clear as of this writing, so figures damage and impacts will likely continue to change as more reports come in.
