A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia's Flores Island early Saturday, August 15, at 5:58 a.m. local time, with its epicenter about 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers. Early USGS estimates indicated roughly 1.5 million people were exposed to strong to severe shaking. The quake triggered a tsunami warning from Indonesia's meteorology agency, which urged residents to stay away from beaches and riverbanks, and was followed by more than 230 aftershocks across the island, the strongest measuring magnitude 6.2. Later the same day, a separate magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Indonesia's western Sumatra island, thousands of kilometers away, though its immense depth (173 km) meant no casualties or damage were recorded from that quake.

The Flores Island quake has proven far deadlier and more destructive. As of the latest reports, at least 53 people have been killed, according to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), with scores more injured and thousands displaced. The head of BNPB said the earthquake destroyed at least 157 houses and damaged nearly 200 more, forcing about 2,000 villagers in Nagekeo regency — the area closest to the epicenter — into temporary shelters, while broader tallies from BNPB found more than 1,300 homes damaged in total, more than two-thirds of those severely, along with damage to health care facilities, schools, and government offices. Separately reported preliminary figures also detailed damage at 87 schools, 18 health facilities, five places of worship and six office buildings. Rescue efforts have been hampered by the region's geography — landslides blocked roads and disrupted communications, delaying teams from fully reaching hard-hit Nagekeo, with more than 3,500 military and police personnel deployed overall — and officials cautioned that the death toll is likely to rise as search and rescue work continues in a region where scattered small islands make access difficult.
