Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: July 25, 2006, 1:00:00 PM
Following a brush of the Philippines on Monday afternoon, Typhoon Kaemi made landfall as a Category 1 storm in Taiwan early Tuesday morning, July 25, bringing heavy rains and sustained winds of more than 110 kph, with gusts to 135 kph. Kaemi continued on to make landfall in Fujian province in China Tuesday afternoon. Now a tropical storm, Kaemi continues to move toward the northwest at 19 kph and is expected to weaken to tropical depression status by Wednesday afternoon.
Typhoon Kaemi’s heavy rains caused several landslides across Taiwan. In all, 6 people were injured in Taiwan as a result of Kaemi. Almost 500 people were evacuated ahead of the storm and 30,000 people were left without power. Schools and offices across five cities in southeastern Taiwan were closed and more than 40 flights were cancelled. Taiwan’s largest harbour, Kaohsiung was also closed ahead of Kaemi’s landfall.
Taiwan has already been hit by Typhoon Bilis this month, which caused significant flooding and one death.
The AIR tropical cyclone team has run simulations using information about the meteorological parameters and rainfall accumulations for this storm. Results indicate that insured losses will be minimal.
