Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: November 5, 2010, 2:15:00 PM
The AIR team is also monitoring the movement of Cyclone Jal on the opposite side of the earth, in the Bay of Bengal. Jal, which was designated a cyclone only this morning, November 5th, is expected to reach Category 1 hurricane strength sometime in the next 24 hours. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, maximum sustained winds at present are about 50 mph. Jal is forecast to make landfall on India’s eastern coast near the border between the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Saturday night or Sunday morning (EDT)—almost coinciding with President Obama’s arrival in the country.
Jal is expected to bring a significant storm surge, flooding rains and, given the often light construction in the area, damaging winds. Chennai (population 4.6 million people, formerly Madras), the capital of Tamil Nadu, at present lies directly in Jal’s path.
The AIR tropical cyclone team is continuing to monitor Cyclone Jal.
