After passing perilously close to the city of Darwin this past weekend, Cyclone Fina make landfall Monday evening on the Kimberley Coast near the mouth of the Berkley River as an Australia Bureau of Meteorology category 3 (Saffir-Simpson category 2) storm. Damaging winds were expected between the Berkley River Mouth out to King George, with high tides also leading to expected minor coastal flooding.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Cyclone Fina’s impacts in Australia from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and landfall angle, with a primary focus on impacts in and around the city of Darwin. They should only be used with exposures in Australia.
Prior to its landfall in the northern end of Western Australia, Fina passed within 45 kilometers of the city of Darwin earlier this past weekend. The storm was the strongest since Cyclone Tracy in 1974 to approach the area, though thankfully impacts were well short of that historic event. Still, at least one longtime resident was quoted by The Guardian as saying Fina “probably is the worst since Tracy”. Much of the reported damage appears to be tree-related, with downed trees cutting power lines and damaging roofs and fences.
Track and Forecast of Cyclone Fina as of 1500 UTC 24 November (Joint Typhoon Warning Center)
Winds in Darwin largely stayed at tropical storm strength during the storm, owing to the cyclone’s relatively small size and the track which kept Fina to Darwin’s north – the highest reported gust was 107 km/h (66 mph) at Darwin Airport. The most dramatic damage scenes occurred at the Royal Darwin Hospital, where the storm caused damage to an external masonry wall which collapsed onto a roof and in turn caused ceiling and other damage inside the building. No one was injured in the incident.
