As of 8:00 am EDT, Melissa was 135 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, with maximum 1-minute sustained wind of 160 mph and a minimum central pressure of 913 mb. Melissa is already bringing tropical storm force winds to Jamaica, ramping up to hurricane force tonight.

ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Hurricane Melissa from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website (note updated URL). Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on Melissa’s key meteorological parameters. They should only be used with exposures in Jamaica.
Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides are likely today through Tuesday, per the National Hurricane Center, with 15-30 inches of rain forecast across the island. The NHC also noted that destructive winds, especially in the mountains, will begin by this evening, leading to extensive infrastructural damage, long-lasting power and communication outages, and isolated communities.
Jamaica is among the more vulnerable nations in the Caribbean to hurricane hazards and potential damage, though there have been improvements since Jamaica’s worst event prior to Melissa to date, Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Gilbert traversed the island from east to west as a Saffir-Simpson category 3 storm, with the eyewall directly impacting Kingston.
