Hurricane Polo is expected to make a double landfall over Baja California and the Pacific coast of Mexico over the next 24 hours. As of 8am local time on September 28th, Polo was located 85 miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lazaro in Mexico, with estimated 1-minute sustained winds of 115 mph and a minimum central pressure of 958 mb. The cyclone is moving northeast at 10 mph.

Compatible with Verisk Synergy Studio, Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s track, minimum central pressure, estimated winds, forward speed, and approach angle. They should only be used with exposures in Mexico.

Hurricane Warnings are in place for the west coast of Baja California Sur from Punta Abreojos to Santa Fe, the east coast of Baja California Sur from Loreto to Bahia San Juan Bautista, and for mainland Mexico from Bahia Kino to Huatabampito. Hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area along the west coast of Baja California Sur by late this afternoon, with tropical storm conditions beginning in the southern portion of the warning area later this morning. These conditions are expected to spread northward and eastward across Baja California Sur later today and tonight. Hurricane conditions are also expected within the Hurricane Warning area and possible in the watch area in mainland northwestern Mexico late tonight through early Tuesday with tropical storm conditions expected to begin tonight.
Polo is expected to produce rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches across portions of Baja California Sur. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches with maximum totals of 8 inches are expected across southern and central portions of Sonora. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.
