As of Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at 02:00 EDT, Typhoon Chataan was located about 414 miles (666 km) south-southeast of Sasebo, Japan. Current estimates put the typhoon's maximum sustained wind speed at 127 mph (204 kph) with gusts up to 155 mph (249 kph). Over the last 6 hours, Chataan has tracked northward at about 14 mph (23 kph).
Typhoon Chataan is expected to continue moving in a northeast direction during the next several hours. The storm struck the Philippines as an intense Category 4 typhoon with sustained winds of 150 mph (241 kph). The intensity is now expected to diminish. In the next 36-48 hours, Chataan could make landfall on the southeastern coast of Kyushu in Japan as a Category 1 storm.
