Posting Date: July 10, 2002, 8:00:00 AM
As of Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at 08:00 a.m. EDT, former typhoon Chataan had been downgraded to a tropical storm. The storm was located about 184 miles (296 km) south-southwest of Tokyo Bay, Japan. Current estimates put the storm's maximum sustained wind speed at 52 mph (84 kph) with maximum gusts at 63 mph (101 kph).
During the last six hours, the storm has tracked northeastward at about 29 mph (47 kph). Forecasters expect Chataan to bypass the southeast coast of Japan later today. While there have been reports of heavy rainfall and evacuations as a result of flooding, wind damage from the storm is expected to be minimal.
This will be the final posting on Chataan.
